Description: The Vancouver Lifeguard Association Beach Alert camps train Jr. Lifesavers in three different environments: preparing participants for first aid emergencies on land, water rescues in pools, and safety on the beach and in the ocean. This dynamic approach provides well-rounded exposure to the different elements of lifesaving and introduces participants to the fundamentals of real world lifesaving. The camps include an introduction to lifeguard-specific skills, such as hand signals, communication, rescue drills, and the use of specialized equipment. Through relay races and simulated rescues, Beach Alert participants have fun as they learn, using equipment such as the paddleboards, rowboats, kayaks, and rescue cans. For children aged 9-15 experienced with the Junior Lifeguard Club/Beach Alert programs or those preparing for or interested in Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross and eventually National Lifeguard. Participants must be able to swim at least two lengths of a normal-sized pool (50m), tread water for at least one minute and are comfortable in deep water.
