With the guidance and joyful musical support of Kyra Millan and Cathy Nosaty, participants will create, rehearse, and perform an original musical, approximately 10 minutes long with 3 -6 original songs. This series will contain all of the aspects of the creative process including drama exercises, improvisation exercises, vocal warm-ups, story creation, character development and music composition techniques.
About the Instructors:
Artist educator and performer Kyra Millan's work in arts education began 18 years ago, facilitating opera workshops for the Canadian Opera Company, as well as musical director of their ?Summer Youth Intensive? training program, and many summer camps. Since then, she has worked in over 200 schools for both the Toronto District School Board and the Toronto Catholic District School Board, teaching workshops as a guest artist educator on behalf of the Royal Conservatory of Music, Opera Atelier, and the Canadian Opera Company. Other arts organizations that Kyra has lead workshops and training programs include; Workman Arts (CAMH), Abilities Arts, Kiwanis, Soundstreams Canada and, most recently, TIFF.
Kyra also teaches courses about opera as part of the Royal Conservatory of Music's Adult programming. This Ten Minute Musical course is based on an incredibly popular course Kyra and Cathy created in the West end called "Gleesical" - where kids learned to create, build, write and perform a musical from scratch - this course brings that fun to adults. Innovative, bubbly, and comedic , this opera comedienne has created many interactive, hilarious and inviting shows about Opera.
This season, Kyra is touring through Ontario as one part of the duo "Millan and Faye". She and pianist Tina Faye have been commissioned to create versions of an opera education work for six years running by the Canadian Opera Company. For 2016-17, they are touring "Millan & Faye present: The Opera" through Ontario, for concert presenters including; The Four Seasons, Hugh's Room, Cornwall Concert Series, Richmond Hills Performance Centre, Welland Concert Series, and Muskoka Concert Association.
Other recent performances have included opening "What Next Festival" for the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, headlining Harbourfront?s Voice and Strings Festival in 2014, and a surprise appearance for the TSOs Pianos In The City in 2015. Cathy Nosaty enjoys a diverse career as a musician, composer, musical director and artist educator. She began her musical training as a classical pianist and her love of creative collaboration led her to working in dance, theatre and scoring to picture. Over the past 30 years she has created scores for over 100 productions for regional and independent theatre companies across Canada.
Cathy's work has been heard on international stages with Ronnie Burkett Theatre of Marionettes, Manitoba Theatre For Young People and DynamO Théâtre. Cathy was Assistant Conductor/Keyboard 1 for the Toronto company of JERSEY BOYS and her documentary film scores include THE MOTHERLOAD for CBC's THE DOC ZONE.Cathy has been an enthusiastic artist educator for the Canadian Opera Company, the Royal Conservatory of Music, Tapestry Opera, Swallowing Clouds, Jumblies Theatre, Community Arts Guild, Theatre Direct, tdsb CREATES and the Ontario Arts Council.
