Description:
This course is designed for those with no musical background and no prior experience with the cello.
Our overarching goals in this level are to find comfortable and efficient positioning with the instrument and the ability to produce accurate pitch and quality tone.
Introduction to the Cello offers students the opportunity to understand the fundamentals of cello playing. Proper set-up is the first priority in this level of cello study. Through a variety of games and exercises we will explore healthy body alignment, good bow usage and appropriate left arm positioning. Once a strong foundation is established we will address avenues towards creating beautiful tone and good pitch.
Repertoire will be drawn from Suzuki Book 1 alongside teaching methodologies drawn from the Suzuki philosophy. Technical work will include scales, arpeggios, tonalizations and numerous other exercises. Basic music reading will be introduced and complimented by applicable discussions of music theory.
The group aspect of the course is intended to reinforce the enjoyment of learning a new skill through the sharing of common challenges and goals. We will explore our creativity through improvisatory exercises drawn from the Creative Ability Development method.
Two performance opportunities exist in this course with the last class in each term being shared amongst all Learn To Play Cello classes and devoted to in-class performances.
