Description:
This course is designed for students who have completed Introduction to the Cello, as well as students who have some prior experience with the cello and/or other musical instrument.
Our overarching goals in this level are to become proficient in creating beautiful tone and accurate pitch while furthering our knowledge of repertoire, etudes, scales and arpeggios.
This course invites students to refine their relationship with the cello through continued attention to posture, body alignment, breath, and efficiency of movement.
Having achieved a degree of ease with the instrument and familiarity with the foundations of reading music, we can now devote further attention to repertoire. We will study Suzuki Cello Book 2, continue with RCM etudes, begin working with Rick Mooney’s Position Pieces for Cello book 1, and continue our study of scales and arpeggios. This work will be complimented by numerous warm ups and technical exercises. The study of music theory will be integrated throughout the course where applicable.
We will utilize the group aspect of this class to build skills for future chamber music participation and continue to explore our creativity through improvisatory exercises from the Creative Ability Development method.
Two performance opportunities exist in this course with the last class in each term being shared amongst all Learn To Play Cello classes and devoted to in-class performances.
Pre-requisite: Students will be required to bring a cello and purchase course materials:
- Cello and cello bow
- End pin strap, rosin
- Suzuki Cello School: Cello Part, Vol. 2
- Cello Etudes: Preparatory - Level 4, The Royal Conservatory
- Position Pieces for Cello, Book 1, by Rick Mooney
More information will be provided in the first class.
