Description: 

This class will be delivered online via Zoom on Thursdays at 6pm EST.

Taught by RCM senior theory examiners.

This course involves a detailed study of music of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, and Classical periods, with an emphasis on the development of musical genres and forms. Representative works of selected composers from each era are studied. This class follows a lecture format that includes listening to recordings and performances, watching videos, reviewing quizzes, a mid-term test, examination preparation, and other interactive activities. Students are required to complete weekly homework assignments.

Level 10 History - New Concepts

  • the Middle Ages (chant, organum, motet, chanson, instrumental dance music)
  • the Renaissance Era (motet, mass, madrigal, chanson, keyboard music)
  • the Baroque Era (opera, cantata, concerto grosso, orchestral suite, keyboard music)
  • the Classical Era (symphony, oratorio, opera, piano concerto, sonata, chamber music)

COURSE TEXTS

Students may choose to purchase the following course texts at the time of registration for the special price of $40 (shipping included within Canada).
Please note that the text for the course will be mailed after the second meeting of the class to the address on the student file. Please ensure the address is fully complete including any apartment or unit numbers.

EXAM

Students may opt to pay for the corresponding Official RCM Certificate Program Exam in this registration. If this option is chosen, a Student Services Representative will contact you after week 3 of the class to confirm your exam registration.
