Harry Somers' Louis Riel
Gain insight into Canada's most important opera Louis Riel, written by twentieth-century Canadian composer Harry Somers with libretto by Mavor Moore and Jacques Languirand. Discover the composer's unusual approach to the opera idiom, the structure and purpose of the work, its history, and the controversies surrounding it. Hear recordings and videos of the opera with a live commentary, participate in class with readings and discussions, and learn to follow along with a music score.
About the Instructor:Toronto pianist, composer, and conductor of new music ensembles, Dr. Réa ("RAY"-ah) Beaumont has an extensive record of performances as a solo and collaborative artist with recordings, radio broadcasts and concerts that continue to garner critical acclaim. She is acknowledged as an expert in classical Canadian music and has collaborated with many esteemed composers to premiere over 50 new works. Published in 2012, her book "Canadian Composer Barbara Pentland" was short-listed for an international award and Réa was named "a world authority" (CBC Radio 2) in the field.
Réa Beaumont holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano and Conducting, Master of Music in Piano, Bachelor of Music in Music Education (Hon.), Artist Diploma in Piano and an ARCT Performance Diploma in Piano. She is the recipient of numerous awards that include The Canada Council, Ontario Arts Council, The Banff Centre, FACTOR, and the BC Arts Council.
