Magnificat anima mea Dominum! For unto us a Child is born! Jauchzet Frohlocket! Il est né! Whatever the language, the seasons of Advent and Christmas are the most important in Christianity, and composers have been celebrating them for centuries. From the humble beginnings of plainsong chants to the pomp and glory of the grand oratorios, these seasons have fostered some of the greatest musical moments in western sacred music. Join instructor John Holland, as we travel through the Advent season with Magnificats by Zelenka, Bach, and Monteverdi, as well as works by Palestrina, Rutter, Cornelius, and others. Then enjoy the splendour of Christmas with Bach's Christmas Oratorio, and large-scale works by Mendelssohn and Saint-Saens. Follow the traditions of sacred music through the analysis of scores, music examples, and demonstrations. Explore the evolution of the carols and sacred music in this season!
