Description: This class is suited to absolute beginners and those looking to explore the fundamentals of ceramics. You will gain an understanding of working in clay to build skills and confidence on the wheel. We will cover preparing clay, basic handbuilding, an introduction to the wheel, finishing and glazing. For the first class, new students should purchase clay and a pottery tool kit from Place des Arts’ Registration Desk. A 1/2 box of M-340 clay is recommended. In the first class, students will discuss other clay options and supplies. Firing and open studio time is included. Open studio access is limited and students are required to sign-up for Open Studio in advance. By registering for this program, the student acknowledges they have read and agree to the studio procedures outlined in the Student Ceramics Handbook.
Biography:Gloria Han studied ceramics at Emily Carr University of Art + Design (BFA) and received her Masters of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2019 as a New Artists’ Society Fellow. She continues her education by training under Master Clay Jung-Hong Kim in traditional Korean ceramics. She uses Korean ceramics as a case study to understand how traditions are adapted, adopted or created anew. She sees craft as a mode to express extreme care, commitment, intimacy and love.
