Biography:
Sylvia has a background in education and art instruction through which she has developed a teaching philosophy motivated by confidence-building and art-making as a space for supported self-expression. She hopes that in this position she can curate and direct classes that help students identify their individuality, introduce tools for visual communication and most importantly encourage children at all stages of artistic development to find success in both learning and creation.
A recent BFA graduate from SFU School for the Contemporary Arts, Sylvia has received the Tanabe/Thorne Award in Visual Arts, the Dr. Tashakkor Award in Contemporary Arts, the Rennie Undergraduate Award in the Visual Arts and has recently been recognized as a longlisted nominee for the Lind Emerging Artist Prize. As a mixed-media performance artist, their work concerns the performativity of identity, gender and domesticity as seen through a queer lens, and these works are often realized as interactive installations and sculptures, using photo, video and craft techniques.
