Description:
Learn how to take the TTC!
DiscoverMyRoute is a travel training program that teaches people 18+ with a developmental disability how to take public transit independently in Toronto.
The first part of the program consists of in-class lessons on street safety, route planning, how to use the bus, subway and streetcar, and what to do in an emergency. In the second part of the program, the student will learn the route of their choice through one-on-one instruction on the TTC (up to 25 hours).
The program includes:
- 16 hours of in-class lessons covering personal safety, trip planning, pedestrian skills, and riding the TTC
- Take-home materials (8 booklets covering the course curriculum)
- One-to-one route training on the TTC with an instructor (up to 25 hours)
- Free access to the DiscoverMyRoute app, which has step-by-step directions and "get-off" notifications that let the rider know when their stop is coming
For the program to be a good fit, the applicant must:
- Want to learn how to travel alone in the community
- Commit to attending all classes (eight two-hour classes)
- Commit to learning a transit route with the help of an instructor
Program fee: $750 per participant
Registrants will be contacted by email to schedule an intake interview, which assesses whether the applicant is suitable for the program. This is required and will take approximately 1.5 hours.
